Android 5.1 Lollipop Factory Images are realised for Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 devices and we have earlier updated Nexus 5 and rooted it. Now we will guide you on how to install CWM / TWRP Recovery and Root Nexus 7, if you have just updated your device by installing the Factory Image.

As you proceed below you will find the steps to install CWM / TWRP Recovery and Root Nexus 7, but before you proceed you have to follow the additional steps to prepare Nexus 7 and avoid mishaps.

Pre-Requisites:

• Make sure your device is Nexus 7 2012 (Wi-Fi), Codenamed – “nakasi”
• Backup your important data, as it will come in handy in case of data loss.

Backup files on Internal Storage to PC

• Charge Nexus 7 to at least 75%, to avoid interruptions in between the rooting process.
• Enable USB Debugging on Nexus 7.
• Download and install USB Drivers for Nexus 7 on PC.
• Setup ADB and Fastboot drivers on PC.
• Unlock Bootloader on Nexus 7.

How to Install CWM / TWRP Recovery on Nexus 7 on Android 5.1 Lollipop:

Step 1: Download your desired Custom Recovery from below links

CWM Recovery

TWRP Recovery

Step 2: Copy it to Fastboot Folder.

Step 3: Open the Command Prompt in Fastboot folder by opening the Fastboot folder and pressing and holding Shift Key and right clicking inside the Fastboot folder at the empty space and choosing open command window here.

Step 4: Power off Nexus 7 and enter into Fastboot / Bootloader Mode, by pressing and holding Volume Down + Power buttons simultaneously until you see Fastboot Menu.

Step 5: Connect Nexus 7 to PC via OEM USB cable.

Step 6: Now in CMD type the below command, depending on which recovery you are going to install and hit enter:

CWM:-

fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.3-grouper.img

TWRP:-

fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.7.1.1-grouper.img

Step 7: Now your desired Custom Recovery will be installed on Nexus 7.

Now that we have installed CWM / TWRP Recovery on Nexus 7, let’s proceed to Root Nexus 7.

How to Root Nexus 7 on Android 5.1 Lollipop LMY47D:

Step 1: Download the SuperSU zip Package from here.

Step 2: Copy it to root of your device’s internal or external storage.

Step 3: Power off Nexus 7.

Step 4: Enter into Bootloader Mode:

• Turn ON Nexus 7 by pressing and holding Volume Down + Power buttons.
• Choose RECOVERY from Fastboot Menu.

Step 6: Reboot Nexus 7.

Step 7: Check for Root Permissions using Root Checker App.
