Google has released the Android M Developer Preview 2 for Nexus 5, Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 Smartphones and earlier we have shared a guide on how to install Android M Developer Preview 2 on Nexus 5, Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 devices and now we are going to show you how to install Custom Recovery (CWM / TWRP) and Root Nexus 5, Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 devices running on Android M Developer Preview.
So without any further discussion, let’s proceed to install CWM / TWRP Recovery and Root Nexus 5, Nexus 6 and Nexus 9. Currently TWRP Recovery is available for only Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 devices, while the Nexus 5 users running on Android M Developer Preview can use the CWM Recovery.
- This rooting tutorial is for Nexus 5, Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 devices running on Android M Developer Preview 2 with build number MPZ79M.
- Backup all of your important data to safe place.
- Enable USB Debugging on your device from Developer Options.
- Unlock Bootloader on your Nexus device.
- Charge it to at least 75%.
- Install suitable USB Drivers on PC.
- Setup ADB and Fastboot drivers on PC.

How to Install Custom Recovery on Nexus 5, Nexus 6 and Nexus 9:
Step 1: Download the Custom Recovery for your device from the above links.
Step 2: Make sure it is in .img format, if not extract it and obtain .img file.
Step 3: Copy the file to Fastboot folder.
Step 4: Boot your Nexus device into Fastboot / Bootloader Mode.
- Power off your device.
- Press and hold Volume Down and Power button simultaneously until you see Bootloader Mode.
Step 5: Connect your device to PC.
Step 6: Open the command prompt inside the Fastboot folder. How? Open the Fastboot folder and press and hold the shift key and right click inside the Fastboot folder at the empty space and choose open command window here.
Step 7: Now in CMD type the following commands:
Nexus 5 user’s type:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-220.127.116.11-hammerhead.img
Nexus 6 user’s type:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-18.104.22.168-shamu.img
Nexus 9 user’s type:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-22.214.171.124-flounder.img
Step 8: That’s all now you have successfully installed CWM / TWRP Recovery on Nexus 5, Nexus 6 or Nexus 9 device.
Step 9: Type the following command to reboot your device into normal mode.
How to Root Nexus 5, Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 on Android M Developer Preview 2:
Step 1: Download the suitable Despair Kernel for your device from the download section, also download SuperSU.zip package.
Step 2: Copy both the packages to the Root of your internal storage or SD card.
Step 3: Boot your device into Recovery Mode.
- Power off your Nexus device.
- Press and hold Volume Down and Power buttons until you are into Bootloader Mode.
- Using Volume Keys choose RECOVERY and select it using Power button.
Step 4: Once your device is in Recovery Mode follow the steps listed here and flash Despair Kernel and then SuperSU.zip package.
Step 5: Reboot your device.
Step 6: Check for Root permissions using Root Checker App.
