How to Install Android M on Sony Xperia Smartphones using FreeXperia ROM

This tutorial shows how to install Android M on Sony Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia M2, Xperia E3, Xperia T3 and Xperia T2 Ultra – Complete guide

As the Android M Developer Preview is out for quite some time now, many Custom ROM developers are working hard to bring ROM’s based on Android M. Similarly FreeXperia is one of the Custom ROM based on Android M Developer Preview and it is available for the Sony Xperia devices. As this is the early stage or early version of FreeXperia Custom ROM, it contains bugs and which will be fixed in the final build. Still if you are curious to install Android M on your Sony Xperia device, then follow the steps listed in this tutorial.

Early Preparations:

  1. Make sure your device is listed in the compatibility list.
  2. Enable USB Debugging on your from Settings > Developer Options.
  3. Charge your device to at least 75%.
  4. Unlock Bootloader on your Sony Xperia device.
  5. Root your device.
  6. Install CWM or TWRP Custom Recovery.
  7. Create a Nandroid Backup.
  8. Backup all of your important data – SMS, Contacts, Call Logs.
  9. Backup TA Partition.

How to Install Android M on Sony Xperia Devices:

Step 1: Download the FreeXperia ROM and Google Apps from the links above.

Step 2: Copy both the files to the root of your internal storage or SD card. Don’t copy them inside any folder, just copy at the root of your device’s storage.

Step 3: Boot into Recovery Mode.

  • Power off your Sony Xperia smartphone.
  • Press and hold Volume Up and Power buttons simultaneously until you see Xperia logo or Recovery Mode.

Alternatively you can use Quick Boot (Reboot) app to boot into Recovery Mode.

Step 4: Install the FreeXperia ROM and then Google Apps package from the Recovery Mode. How? Follow the guide here.

Step 5: Reboot your device and enjoy Android M on Sony Xperia.
