ASUS Zenfone 2 was announced back in January this year and it is the powerful smartphone with 5.5 Inch Full HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Atom Z3580 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage and Android 5.0 Lollipop. The device is priced around $269.99 and is on pre-sale at many online stores.
In this tutorial we are going to unlock Bootloader and Root ASUS Zenfone 2. This tutorial follows the unofficial method of unlocking bootloader on ASUS Zenfone 2, since the official method is not yet released. All thanks to the Shakalaca, an XDA member, for providing this method.
So without any further ado, let’s proceed to unlock Bootloader and Root ASUS Zenfone 2 Android Smartphone.
- Backup all of your important data – SMS, Contacts, Call Logs etc.
- Enable USB Debugging on ASUS Zenfone 2.
- Charge ASUS Zenfone 2 to at least 75%.
- Install ASUS USB Drivers on PC.
- Setup ADB and Fastboot drivers on PC – Windows | Mac.

How to Root ASUS Zenfone 2:
This method has following benefits:
- OTA updates can be applied even though it is rooted.
- No boot loops
- Unrooting is not required before applying the OTA update.
Step 1: Download the one-click root tool for ASUS Zenfone 2 – Link.
Step 2: Extract it to a folder on desktop.
Step 3: Connect ASUS Zenfone 2 to PC via USB cable.
Step 4: Run CheckBeforeAction.bat from the extracted files. You will receive confirmation to proceed to next step.
Step 5: Now Run Root_zenfone.bat
That’s it now your ASUS Zenfone 2 will be rooted automatically.
How to Unlock Bootloader on ASUS Zenfone 2:
Step 1: Make sure your device is running on latest firmware i.e., v2.19.40 and its model no is either ZE551ML or ZE550ML.
Step 2: Download Black splash screen – Link.
Step 3: Connect ASUS Zenfone 2 to PC using USB cable.
Step 4: Open command prompt and type the following commands:
getprop ro.isn > /factory/asuskey
Step 5: Now your device should reboot into Recovery Mode and will update automatically. You will see a white splash screen which indicates that the factory lock has been removed.
Step 6: Copy the Black Splash Screen to the ADB folder and open the command prompt inside this folder by pressing and holding Shift key and right click inside the folder and choose open command window here.
Step 7: Now in CMD type:
adb reboot bootloader
This boots ASUS Zenfone 2 into Bootloader Mode.
Shows the list of devices connected to PC in Fastboot Mode.
fastboot flash splashscreen splashscreen.img
Step 8: Reboot your device.
