Sony has earlier rolled out Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for Xperia Z, ZL and ZR via OTA with 10.7.A.0.222 as build number. After updating your device with the latest firmware update you might have lost the root access and so in this tutorial we are going to show you how to install TWRP Recovery and Root Xperia ZL and Xperia Z Android smartphones running on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. This tutorial may also work for other firmware versions but try it at your own risk.
If you still haven’t updated your Xperia Z, ZL or ZR to latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop 10.7.A.0.222 firmware then you can manually update your device from here.
Before we proceed to install TWRP Recovery and Root Xperia ZL and Xperia Z we must prepare them for the installation and the rooting process.
- Make sure you are using an unlocked Xperia ZL or Xperia Z.
Note: Carrier models might not work with this method. Follow this at your own risk.
- Backup all the necessary and important data – Backup SMS | Contacts | Call Logs.
- Ensure you have at least 75% charge left on the device.
- Enable USB Debugging.
- Install the suitable Sony USB drivers on PC.
- Setup ADB and Fastboot drivers – Windows | Mac.
- Unlock Bootloader on Xperia ZL and Xperia Z.

How to install TWRP Recovery and Root Xperia ZL and Xperia Z:
Step 1: Download the TWRP Recovery image and Super SU on PC and copy it inside the Fastboot folder.
Step 2: Transfer the SuperSU to root of the device’s internal or external storage.
Step 3: Connect Xperia Z or ZL to PC.
Step 4: Open the command prompt inside the Fastboot folder by opening the Fastboot folder and pressing and holding the shift key and right clicking inside the Fastboot folder at the empty space and choose open command window here.
Step 5: Now in CMD type the following commands:
To confirm that the device is properly connected to PC.
adb reboot bootloader
This command boots the device into Fastboot / Bootlaoder Mode.
fastboot flash boot boot.img
This command flashes TWRP Recovery on Xperia ZL or Xperia Z.
Step 6: Once the flashing is completed choose RECVOERY from the Fastboot menu to boot into Recovery Mode.
Step 7: From the TWRP Recovery, wipe data and cache and then flash SuperSU package which you have copied earlier.
Step 8: Reboot and check for Root Permissions using Root Checker App.
Now you have successfully installed TWRP Recovery and Rooted Xperia ZL and Xperia Z.
