Have you updated your Nexus device to Android 6.0 Marshmallow and want to root it to start your development process or to play around with it then this guide is for you – In this tutorial we are going to Install CWM/ TWRP Recovery and Root Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player devices. This tutorial involves installation of modified boot image to achieve root access on your Nexus device and we are not responsible for any damage to your Nexus device and proceed with this tutorial at your own risk. Still we can recommend you to follow some pre-requisites to avoid interruptions or mishaps while installing CWM/ TWRP Recovery and rooting Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player.
- Ensure that your Nexus device is not running out of battery. It is recommended to have at least 75% charge.
- Enable USB Debugging from Developer Options.
- Install suitable Nexus USB Drivers on PC.
- Backup all of your important data and stuff to safe place to avoid data loss.

How to install CWM/ TWRP Recovery on Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player
Step 1: Download the CWM/ TWRP Recovery and Modified boot image for your Nexus device from the above downloads section.
Step 2: Rename the Recovery file to recovery.img and Modified boot image to boot.img and copy both of them inside the Fastboot folder or the folder in which adb.exe and fastboot.exe files are located.
Step 3: Open command prompt inside the Fastboot folder by opening the folder and pressing and holding the shift key and right clicking inside the Fastboot folder at the empty space and choosing open command window here.
Step 4: Connect your device to PC and type the commands listed below in the command prompt.
This command lists devices connected to PC with USB Debugging Enabled.
This command boots your device into Bootloader / Fastboot Mode.
fastboot flash boot boot.img
This command flashes the modified boot image on Nexus.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
This command flashes the Custom Recovery (recovery.img) to your Nexus smartphone.
That’s it now you have CWM/ TWRP Recovery installed on Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player and it’s time to Root Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player.
How to Root Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player:
Step 1: Download the SuperSU package from the above downloads section.
Step 2: Transfer it to root of your device’s internal or external storage.
Step 3: Boot Nexus device into Fastboot mode as shown in the above steps and from Fastboot mode choose RECOVERY to boot into Recovery Mode.
Step 4: From Recovery Mode Install SuperSU package. How? Follow here.
Step 5: Reboot your device and check for Root permissions using Root Checker App.
